Charlston Coral Earrings
These one-of-a-kind earrings feature little cabochons of natural red coral. The stone has been bezel set (wrapped in silver) and framed in geometric textured stamping to compliment the stone. With an oxidised background (blackened) this stones vibrance really pops. It is difficult to capture the exact colour as these stones change depending on the natural light. The design was inspired by my enduring love of elegant Art Deco’s sleek geometric forms combined with some Art Nouveau long sinuous organic lines all combined with a little romance, they would be lovely to dance in.
Hand sawn, individually stamped, cut, drilled and polished, these silver hanging works will go with any outfit or occasion. Created entirely from Reclaimed and Recycled Sterling Silver and slow crafted with much care. Each earring is hand-cut with a tiny sawblade and each pattern hand stamped and soldered together, therefore slightly unique and never perfectly matched. The gemstones are sister stones – no two ever exactly the same.
The ear hooks are also hand-fabricated from sterling silver.
The actual earring section measures approximately 28mm in length and the width 20mm (at its widest point). The gauge (thickness) of the silver is 1.2mm – making these lightweight, but durable.
Rosarita is a unique material, which derives its exceptionally rich, red colour from the process of gold refining. It is a unique by-product of the 1960s and 1970s gold refining processes. Alaskan beach sand was smelted for its gold content and the slag by-product was Rosarita, which is essentially a gold-infused glass. The base material for Rosarita is silica (which is quartz particles) mixed with gold at high temperatures.
Old processes prior to 1960 used the old method of open crucible and fire (infused heat) to smelt the sand, leaving behind a glassy-like material in the crucible, which is known as slag. This gold slag was used in the 1940s through 1970s for jewellery, carvings, flint napping, etc. This material known as Rosarita is some of the most exceptional coloured gold slag ever produced. Most other slag were mostly red in color but not nearly as vivid as the magnificent Rosarita.
Rosarita is no longer produced because of improved efficiency in gold refinement. Modern processes extract nearly all of the gold out of the sand, leaving an un-remarkable clear glass slag without the deep red colour that makes Rosarita so beautiful.
Made with lots of love, heart and soul.
